video-gen in Practice: AI-Powered Video Generation With One Click — Seedance Model Brings Your Ideas to Life

SFD Lab in practice: using OpenClaw's video-gen skill to call Doubao Seedance model for product demo video generation. Complete text-to-video + image-to-video workflow, including 4 real pitfalls we hit.

What video-gen Does

video-gen connects OpenClaw to AI video generation APIs. The Seedance model (Doubao/ByteDance) is currently one of the better options for:

  • Text-to-video: Describe a scene, generate a video clip
  • Image-to-video: Start from an image, animate it into a video
  • Product demos: Generate short product showcase videos
  • Social media clips: Short-form content for platforms like Douyin or Instagram Reels

Installation

clawhub install video-gen

You'll need a Doubao API key. Register at volcengine.com and get your key from the Doubao console.

Basic Usage

# Text-to-video
Generate a 5-second video: A coffee cup on a wooden desk, morning sunlight streaming through the window, steam rising slowly

# Image-to-video
Animate this product image into a 5-second clip showing gentle rotation
[attach product image]

# Batch generation for A/B testing
Generate 3 variations of this scene with different lighting conditions

SFD Lab Use Case: Product Demo Videos

We use video-gen to create short demo clips for ClawHub skill pages. Process:

  1. Write a text prompt describing the skill's value in 2-3 sentences
  2. Generate a 5-10 second ambient video that matches the skill's theme
  3. Use as background for the skill landing page

Previously this required a video editor or stock footage subscription. Now it's a one-line prompt in OpenClaw.

Real Pitfalls We Hit

Pitfall 1: Vague prompts produce generic results. "A person using a computer" generates stock-photo-style content. Be specific: lighting, time of day, style, specific actions.

Pitfall 2: Long generation times. Seedance can take 30-90 seconds per clip. Don't fire multiple requests simultaneously — queue them.

Pitfall 3: Text in videos looks wrong. AI-generated text within videos (signs, screens) often has errors. Avoid prompts that require readable text in the video.

Pitfall 4: Consistency across clips. If you need multiple clips to look like part of the same series, use consistent style descriptors across all prompts.

Summary

video-gen is still an emerging capability — results are impressive for ambient/atmospheric content but inconsistent for anything requiring precise actions or text. For product demos that don't need specific interactions, it's already production-ready.
