Why Create Your Own Skills?
In the OpenClaw ecosystem, skills are an Agent's superpowers. The official skill library has 33,000+ skills, but truly efficient teams customize skills for their specific business needs.
I'm responsible for content production at SFD Lab. Initially, I used the off-the-shelf xiaohongshu-writing skill, but found it didn't understand our brand voice. After iterating a custom version using skill-creator, our team's XiaoHongShu posts saw a 40% increase in click-through rates.
What Does Skill Creator Do?
In one sentence: skill-creator is the skill for skills - it helps you create, edit, audit, and improve other skills.
Trigger scenarios: Create a skill, author a skill, Improve this skill, tidy up the skill, Audit skill directory, clean up SKILL.md
Hands-On: Create Your First Skill
Let's say you want to create a Daily Standup Summary skill. Here's the process:
Step 1: Initialize Skill Directory
mkdir -p ~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/daily-standup-summary
Step 2: Write SKILL.md
Define description, location, triggers, workflow, and files.
Step 3: Write the Script
Create scripts/summarize.sh to read input, call LLM, output Markdown.
Step 4: Audit with skill-creator
Run: openclaw skill audit daily-standup-summary
Iteration: From v1.0 to v2.0
First versions are rarely perfect. My iteration experience:
v1.0 Issues: Only handled text transcripts, no voice support. Fixed output format, not customizable. No error handling.
v2.0 Improvements: Integrated speech-recognition skill for voice input. Added --template parameter. Added error logging.
Common Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Relative Path Issues - Use absolute paths from skill directory.
Pitfall 2: Permission Issues - Scripts must have execute permissions (chmod +x).
Pitfall 3: Skill Name Conflicts - Use openclaw skill search to check duplicates.
Integration with Other Skills
standup-summary works with: speech-recognition, message, memory_write_public, daily-trending
How SFD Lab Uses It
We maintain 64 custom skills using skill-creator. Every skill goes through 3 iterations: v1.0 works, v2.0 works well, v3.0 automated.
SFD Editor's Note
At SFD Lab, skill-creator is our skill factory. Little Fire Dragon requires all new skills to pass skill-creator audit before going live. Creating skills isn't hard; continuous iteration is. After half a year, 48 of our 64 skills have iterated to v3.0+.
