MCP Practical Guide: Connect Your AI Agent to Everything
No more information silos
What Is MCP?
One sentence: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the "universal interface standard" between AI Agents and external tools.
Before MCP, connecting an AI Agent to a new tool (like Notion, GitHub, or a database) required custom code and API integration every time — tedious and non-reusable. With MCP, tool providers publish MCP Servers to a unified standard, and AI Agents connect using the same standard. Neither side needs to rebuild from scratch.
Analogy: MCP is the USB standard of the AI world — whatever device you plug in, the interface is the same, and it just works.
Three Core Concepts
1. MCP Server
The "adapter" provided by the tool. Think Notion's MCP Server or GitHub's MCP Server. Run it locally or on a server, and it becomes an interface your AI Agent can call.
2. MCP Client
The integration layer on the AI Agent side. Claude, OpenClaw, and other MCP-compatible agents have a built-in MCP Client that automatically discovers and calls your running MCP Servers.
3. Resources / Tools / Prompts
Three types of capabilities exposed by an MCP Server:
- Resources: Readable data (files, database records)
- Tools: Executable actions (create, modify, query)
- Prompts: Preset prompt templates
Three Ready-to-Run Examples
Example 1: Let AI Read and Write Your Notion
npx @notionhq/notion-mcp-server
After setup: "Add a task to my Notion project database: Optimize the login page, due next Friday." AI operates Notion directly — no browser needed.
Example 2: Let AI Manage Your GitHub
npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-github
After setup: "Check PRs in this repo from the last 7 days — any that haven't been reviewed in over 3 days?"
Example 3: Let AI Query Your Local Database
npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-sqlite --db-path ./mydata.db
Then query in natural language: "What are the top 5 best-selling products in the last 30 days?"
Configuring MCP in OpenClaw
OpenClaw has built-in MCP Client support. Add to your config file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"notion": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@notionhq/notion-mcp-server"],
"env": {
"NOTION_API_KEY": "your-key"
}
}
}
}
Restart OpenClaw and the Agent will automatically discover and register the MCP Server.
Common Pitfalls
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Server fails to start | Node version too old | Upgrade to Node 18+ |
| Agent can't see tools | Config file path error | Check JSON format and path |
| Permission denied | API key scope too narrow | Regenerate key with full permissions |
When Does MCP Make Sense?
- ✅ AI needs to frequently interact with specific external services (Notion, GitHub, databases)
- ✅ Multiple AI Agents need to share the same set of tools
- ✅ You're tired of manually copy-pasting data to AI
- ❌ One-off tasks (pasting content directly to AI is faster)
- ❌ The tool has no MCP Server yet (requires custom development)
