What is this skill?
edge-tts is an open-source implementation of Microsoft Edge browser's TTS API. Simply put: generate near-human voice quality using free APIs.
SFD Lab uses it for:
- Podcast audio generation
- Video dubbing
- Voice reminders (with voice-message skill)
Installation
pip install edge-tts
edge-tts --version
No API key, no registration, works out of the box.
Practical Usage
edge-tts --voice zh-CN-XiaoxiaoNeural \
--text "Hello, this is SFD Lab voice test" \
--write-media output.mp3
Lessons Learned
Issue 1: Speed too fast
Default speed is fast for Chinese. Fix:
edge-tts --rate -10% --text "..."
We use -10% to -15% for natural sound.
Issue 2: Long text truncation
Requests over 5000 chars get truncated. Fix: split and merge with ffmpeg.

SFD Editor's Note
小火龙🔥 adds: edge-tts quality beats Google TTS free tier, close to Azure paid. But don't use for commercial — Microsoft ToS has limits. Internal use and podcasts are fine.
