A Complete AI-Powered Reading Notes Workflow
From "read and forget" to personal knowledge base
The Problem
Most people read books, take notes, and then find that when they look back:
- The notes are just excerpts — no personal understanding
- Content is isolated, with no connection to knowledge from other books
- Over time, the memories fade completely
AI can help solve all three — but only if you have a workflow, not just occasional ad hoc questions.
Four-Step Workflow
Step 1: Narrate, Don't Excerpt
After finishing a chapter, close the book and speak instead of writing:
"I just read Chapter X of [Book Title]. The main points were… I think… I'm still not sure about…"
Narrating forces you to reorganize information in your own words. AI will turn your scattered thoughts into structured notes.
Step 2: Let AI Question You
After narrating, let AI play Socrates:
"You said X was important — why? If you explain it using Y, what do you think?"
Being questioned exposes the parts you thought you understood but actually didn't.
Step 3: Structured Archive
Ask AI to organize the conversation into a standard format:
## [Book Title] Chapter X
**Core Idea**:
**My Understanding**:
**Still Unclear**:
**Connections to Other Knowledge**:
Lock in this format and use it for every book — that's what makes it a searchable knowledge base.
Step 4: Connect the Dots
Every two weeks, share all your recent notes with AI:
"These are notes from five books I've read recently. Find connections between them — especially contradictory viewpoints."
This is what transforms isolated points into a network structure.
Practical Details
Use voice input: For narration, use your phone's voice keyboard — don't type. Typing unconsciously pulls you into "excerpt mode."
No perfectionism: "I think it was something like…" is completely fine. AI will fill in and correct.
Be specific with questions: Don't ask AI to "question me." Say "Ask me three deep questions about the second point I made."
Tool Recommendations
| Step | Tool Options |
|---|---|
| Voice Input | Built-in phone voice keyboard, iFlytek Input |
| AI Conversation | ChatGPT, Claude, OpenClaw |
| Archive | Notion, Obsidian, local Markdown files |
If you use OpenClaw, pair it with the writing skill so AI remembers your note-taking style and produces consistent formatting every time.
The Key Insight
The core of this workflow isn't AI — it's the structure that forces you to actively process information. AI just makes that structure easier to stick to, since questioning, organizing, and connecting used to all fall on you alone.
