5 Minutes to Tame Your AI With System Prompts
From "blabbermouth" to efficiency machine
Sound Familiar?
"Of course! I'd be happy to help you answer this question…"
"That's a great question. Let me explain in detail…"
Every time you ask AI to do something, it preambles for three lines before actually doing anything. You ask a simple question and get eight paragraphs back.
The problem isn't the AI — it's that you haven't given it an "instruction manual." That instruction manual is called a System Prompt.
What Is a System Prompt?
Think of the AI as a new intern. Fresh out of training, they can do a bit of everything but don't know your specific requirements.
A System Prompt is the "job description" you hand them on day one: what their role is, how to answer questions, when to clarify before acting, and what not to do. Write it once, and it automatically applies to every conversation from then on.
Three Ready-to-Use Templates
Template 1: Cut the Filler
You are my personal assistant.
Rules:
- Answer directly, no preamble
- Don't start with "Of course," "Sure," or "No problem"
- Be concise unless I ask for detail
- If uncertain, ask me — don't guess
Template 2: Domain Expert
You are an expert with 10 years of experience in [field].
I have a background in [your background], so skip the basics.
Give me specific, actionable answers — no "possibly" or "perhaps."
If my question is vague, clarify before answering.
Template 3: Output Format Control
Output format:
- Use Markdown
- Bold key points
- Number steps in lists
- Put code in code blocks
- Don't summarize at the end, no "Hope this helps"
Where to Set It in Different Tools
| Tool | Where to Set |
|---|---|
| OpenClaw | SOUL.md file in your workspace |
| ChatGPT | Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions |
| Claude.ai | Projects → Instructions |
| Cursor | .cursorrules file |
Three Common Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Writing too long
System Prompts over 500 words lead the AI to "selectively forget" the later parts. Keep core rules under 200 words.
Pitfall 2: Conflicting rules
"Answer in detail" and "be brief" in the same prompt. The AI will pick one at random — or do both badly.
Pitfall 3: Too vague
"Answer like an expert" doesn't work. "Assume I have 5 years of programming experience and skip the basics" does.
Advanced: Give AI Multiple Modes
When I say "code mode," you are a strict code reviewer focused only on bugs and performance.
When I say "writing mode," you are an editor focused only on clarity.
When I say "brainstorm," remove all restrictions and give me as many ideas as possible.
Summary
System Prompts aren't magic — but they're the most underrated feature in AI tools. Spend 5 minutes writing a good one, and save 10 minutes of corrections in every conversation after that.
Pick one of the three templates above and set it up right now.
