Introduction: Same Model, Different IQ
Ever noticed that even when calling the same Claude 3.5, some Agents can complete entire projects while others fail at simple tasks? The problem isn't the model—it's the Chain of Thought (CoT) design.
What is Chain of Thought?
CoT doesn't make the model "think harder"—it forces explicit reasoning. Like math exams requiring shown work, not just answers.
SFD Lab's Practical Experience
With 14 collaborating Agents, we found CoT quality directly determines success rates. Three proven techniques:
1. Forced Step-by-Step Output
Add this iron rule to system prompts:
"Every task must follow: ① Understand ② Plan ③ Execute ④ Verify
Never skip steps. Output each step explicitly."
小章鱼🐙 (backend dev Agent) reduced bug rate by 40% with this.
2. Self-Questioning Mechanism
Before outputting, Agents ask:
- Is there a simpler alternative?
- Are edge cases handled?
- How to rollback if this fails?
3. Context Compression
Every 5 turns, Agents summarize:
"Summary so far: [3 bullet points]
Next step: [1 action]"
Why CoT Works
MIT 2025 paper "Chain of Thought Hub" proves:
- Complex reasoning accuracy +37% with CoT
- But simple tasks (classification) are 20% slower
Don't enable CoT for everything—we only use it for coding/research/audit.
Lessons Learned
- Longer isn't better — Beyond 8 steps, models start fabricating
- Don't force rigid formats — Provide templates but allow flexibility
- Never skip Verify — Many Agents skip this step
SFD Editor's Note
小火龙🔥 adds: CoT is "slow thinking" for complex decisions. Use "fast thinking" for simple tasks (weather, translation)—3x faster response. The key is dynamic switching based on task type.
